May is Mental Health Awareness month. If two years ago you told me that I would be writing a blog about my daughter's serious mental illness and how it relates to my spirituality, I’d probably gotten quite angry at you.
You see, I spent eight months keeping her alive. That is not an exaggerated statement – it’s reality. Along with anxiety, lack of sleep, and psychosis, she had developed an eating disorder; food avoidance. I spent my days physically lifting her from bed, hand feeding her, and forcibly making her to take her medication. I measured our success at the end of the day, by getting her to eat something other than salad and getting medication into her. My goal – keep her alive.
Guess who else I needed to keep alive? Me. I remember one dark moment, standing in the kitchen, wondering if I would survive this. It’s hard to even admit, but I had that thought. We had gotten into a habit of going outside at least once per day.
She would pace around the pool and talk, and I would sit and breathe. It was July in Florida, so it was very hot, but it was our daily outing. I recall thinking that something HAD to be good – there is some kind of good right now, right? The answer was the beautiful blue Florida summer sky. It was the first step in gratitude.
Gratitude immediately became a daily practice. What else could I practice daily that would help me? Reiki!
I had gotten my level one Reiki attunement a year prior but hadn’t done a lot with it. I wasn’t even sure I believed in it! Here I was, sitting home every day, stress and trauma pumping through me like our blood does, what did I have to lose?! The second step was practicing Reiki daily.
Reiki helped to bring peace and healing to my soul. It helped me to sleep at night. My anxiety levels were dropping. I got curious, what if I have my Reiki level two attunement and start to do Reiki on my daughter?
At this point, as any parent can imagine, you’ll try anything. My daughter had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and was experiencing head pain. I started to treat her with Reiki. The pain would immediately stop when I performed Reiki on her.
Realizing that part of her illness (now I think there was more to play here) was to help people she felt needed it, by laying her hands on them. Which actually is… Reiki! She received her level one attunement and started practicing as well. This season of life wasn’t just my awakening, but it was our awakening.
Two years later, she has successfully weaned off of her medication and is stable with the help of amazing doctors. My gifts have bloomed into coaching, mediumship, and becoming a Reiki Master. I left my corporate position of over eight years and am following my driving path of helping other women find theirs.
