The Summer Solstice, also known as Litha and Midsummer, is recognized each year between June 20-22. It marks the first day of the Summer season, the Sun enters the astrological sign of Cancer, and it is the longest day of the year.
The month of June was named after the wife of Jupiter named “Juno”. Juno is the daughter of Saturn, and the mother of Mars. This Roman goddess ruled over marriage and fertility. She bestows a vital and energetic force that is kind and youthful.
We honor this time of year for the blessings of Mother Earth. The ancients, such as the Celts, Norse, and Druids held celebrations to honor the Sun god’s power to nurture and fertilize the soil. The fertile Goddess germinates the seeds in her womb and births new life into the world!
The old ones were well versed in the cycles of the year. They spent the majority of their time outside in the elements and using the sky as a map to chart their course.
There is a time for preparation, for making the soil ready, for planting and fertilization, cultivating and oxygenating. As life springs from the Earth it requires tending and protection from pests and disease. All working towards a bountiful harvest.
The Sun is at its full power and potency on this day. It also symbolizes the first harvest is soon to come, as everything is lush and full of life. The faeries are freely dancing about with playfulness and mischief. You may honor them by placing offerings of fresh baked goods and sweets on your altar or in the garden.
The ancients would light large bonfires demonstrating gratitude to the Sun’s blessings. The ash from all the bonfires would be collected and distributed over the crops, around the homes, and the animals. This would reinforce the protection from the gods and the elements.
I recommend decorating your altar or sacred space with items, such as flowers and colorful candles of pink, green, yellow, and white. Meditate on gratitude and life that connects us all. Journal about the many blessings that you have been bestowed and manifesting a generous harvest of your own.
